Globally, the importance of switching to renewable energy is increasingly becoming apparent, and this is no less the case for Bangladesh. To that end, the fact that Bangladesh has reached out to the European Union (EU) to boost its production in the renewable energy sector is certainly a step in the right direction.
For years, Bangladesh has relied on fossil fuels such as coal and gas in order to meet its energy generation demands. However, we have seen a dwindling of such fossil fuels in recent years, especially when it comes to the discovery of new gas fields. This is not a trend exclusive to us as globally, deposits containing fossil fuels are on the decline.
Western car manufacturers, for instance, are making a big push to rely on electricity for the running of cars. Even in Bangladesh, fuel pumps are out of service most of the time due to low gas pressure. As such, if we do not switch to renewable energy soon, we won't have energy to use in general.
The initiative by Bangladesh also presents an opportunity -- countries like the US are focusing on extracting gas domestically and are continuing to rely on fossil fuels. However, there is a global race to go to hundred percent renewability, as the pros clearly outweigh the cons.
While we may have missed out on many such opportunities throughout the years, it is never too late to start relying on greener sources of energy.
With the right amount of focus and dedication, Bangladesh can soon join the ranks of nations which have successfully pivoted to renewable energy. Let's make sure that turns out to be the case soon.
