Letting our children play

Despite it being repeatedly discussed how important open spaces and playgrounds are for the all-round development of children, the actual number of such spaces in Dhaka has decreased consistently over the last few years.

The capital's rapid urbanization has invariably led to the demolition of almost all open recreational spaces, which subsequently cause long-term detrimental effects for all. The biggest victims in this scenario, however, are the children who are deprived of an appropriate amount of physical activity.

There are innumerable studies that prove how regular physical activity positively impacts a child's physical, psychological, and emotional growth -- all crucial aspects to their overall development. It can also help them build stronger social skills, which can help them tremendously in their futures.

This is even more true for children growing up in a fast-paced and overpopulated concrete jungle, which can be a stifling environment for people of all ages. Which is why it is so crucial that children are provided with sufficient playgrounds and recreational spaces to play and interact with each other.

While the government has announced plans to develop such spaces in the past, we are unfortunately yet to see those plans come to fruition.

In order to ensure that our children are provided with every possible tool they need to grow up to be well-rounded individuals -- which, let's not forget, is our duty -- we must pay close attention to what they require in the early stages of their development, and facilitate it.

The government would do well to commit to the promises made, and take immediate action to create playgrounds across the city, so that no child is deprived of their right to play and grow the way they need to.

Our children are the future of this nation, and their physical and mental well-being must be our top priority.
