Clearing out the horizon

From being one of the major drivers behind air pollution to continuously eroding the quality of our agricultural land -- brick kilns continue to be one of the most prominent, structural problems that face life in Bangladesh.

Despite government mandates and nationwide media campaigns, there has been almost zero reduction in brick kilns operating across the country.

However, with Bangladesh being in prime danger from the potential fallout of climate change, continuing to rely on brick kilns like this is akin to chopping off our limbs. Furthermore, with the economy growing, we need to focus both on sustainable economic production systems -- in order to compete with the rest of the world -- and ensuring healthier lives for our citizens.

Brick kilns continue to operate in an unsustainable manner while simultaneously being in operation in areas where the black smoke has a debilitating effect on both people and the environment.

Furthermore, authorities' promotional campaigns regarding efficient brick making techniques which are not only better for people and the environment, but also makes the art of brick making more efficient -- driving down costs and boosting revenues in the process -- has altogether been ignored.

Considering the current state and future projection of damage done to both people and to the environment due to the operation of these death machines, however, this is something that simply can't continue.

A switch to eco-friendly bricks is among the most important things we can do for the future health of our nation. Furthermore, authorities need to crack down harder on brick kilns and put an end to how they operate. This black smoke has covered our horizons long enough. No longer can we stay silent.
