The recent report of the leader of a Rohingya refugee insurgency group's call to action for violence against the group's opposition forces inside the refugee camps in Ukhiya are nothing if not concerning.
Such incitements for violence are the natural result of the global inaction towards ensuring justice for Myanmar's Rohingya population, who have had to endure intense persecution at the hands of their murderous regime. It is baffling just how much leeway the international community continues to gift Myanmar when it comes to its genocidal tendencies against its own Rohingya citizens.
It has been more than five years now since the Rohingya crisis began and the Bangladeshi government eagerly stepped up to provide the fleeing refugees with the shelter they needed, but our nation's generosity and patience have been tested time and again by Myanmar and indeed the rest of the world as it fails to make repatriation a reality.
And now it is indeed Bangladesh, the only nation that dared to do the right thing, that might experience the repercussions of the international community's inaction.
The refugee camps harbouring the million-plus Rohingya population is already home to an inordinate number of crimes and other illicit activities that has long threatened to destabilize the locality, and now, with the looming threat of intra-factional violence, it seems that the world has chosen to completely turn its back on not just the Rohingya, but on our nation as well.
The Rohingya refugees are not to be blamed in any of this. It is the genocidal Myanmar government along with the apathy displayed by the rest of the world that has allowed the status quo to foment in the first place.
However, there is still time.
The Myanmar government needs to be held accountable for this crisis and the international community can yet do its part to ensure that.
Bangladesh has done the right thing, now it's time for the rest of the world to follow suit.
