The long-coveted inauguration of the metro rail project is close at hand. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going to spearhead the ceremony on December 28.
The inauguration comes after decades of speculation and six years of official construction that started in 2016. With this, a huge part of Dhaka will be able to utilize the services of the kind of smart public transportation system that has become mandatory in the 21st century. With the completion of the project by 2025 when the entire city should come under the purview of the metro, it seems like our prayers for a solution to our traffic woes are finally on the verge of being answered.
This is truly a new era for Bangladesh. Not only have we proven that we have the capability to take on complicated projects for the benefit of the country -- the completion of both the first phase of the metro rail and the Padma Bridge should be a testament to this fact, but we have also shown to the world that we can undertake such projects in the face of the most severe adversities.
The metro rail project in itself was mired in technical issues and faced the consequences of post-pandemic fallout. Despite all that, we have persevered. The best thing about this is that in the month of our victory, we have conquered another milestone, one that will work as a guiding light for years to come.
With momentum like this, within the next couple of decades, we are destined to become a major economy in the global arena.
