Shaking hands with China

While Bangladesh has been pro-active in furthering its many existing bilateral ties with multiple nations, it is safe to say that the country's relationship with China remains at the forefront as a concrete source of support.

To that end, it is encouraging to know that this relationship is set to be strengthened further, and warrants our exports to scale up in the near future. During his latest visit, State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi declared that the goods in the 98% tariff-line, exported from Bangladesh to China, will receive duty-free treatment from September 1.

This is good news, as it will boost our exports to China significantly.

And it is especially true for leather exporters, as numerous kinds of leather products are included in the 98% tariff-line.

This is a great opportunity -- for our leather industry, as well as exporters of other goods in the tariff-line -- to bolster our economic progress. Increased exports to China will not only bring in more revenue for the country, but will also improve our already established relationship with China.

Bangladesh continues to make strides in terms of economic development, exploring and building on various avenues that can aid us in the process. While there have been a multitude of setbacks, opportunities like the duty-free treatment of exports can help us counter the current risks and uncertainty that the global economy is facing.

Needless to say, this is an opportunity to bank on, and we would be wise to treat it with the regard it demands.
