A friend in need

It is encouraging and heartening to see that, in a continuous effort to expand its humanitarian aid network and becoming a nation that assists others, Bangladesh has sent significant quantities of dried food, blankets, tents, and medicine to earthquake-hit Afghanistan.

Having achieved our independence a mere 50 years ago, it was not so far in the distant past that Bangladesh itself had to rely on the humanitarian help of other nations to sustain itself. The fact that we have come this far as to not only send humanitarian aid to other nations, but are also housing refugees from war-torn Myanmar, signifies the fact that we have come far in our journey of nationhood, and is a testament to the rapidity and efficiency of our progress.

Afghanistan has been facing a difficult period in its history for a while now due to the internal political turmoil of the country and the rapid and in some cases debilitating takeover of the nation by the Taliban as NATO forces withdrew from the country last year.

Due to the current governance structure of the country, when it comes to the international sphere, Afghanistan doesn’t have many friends that it can turn to in its hour of need. As such, Bangladesh has shown both humility and foresight in helping Afghanistan out during its time of need.

We have once again established ourselves as a beacon of humanity, opting to help out everyone in need regardless of their political affiliations. Through this act of grace and humanity, Bangladesh has no doubt also strengthened its diplomatic position in the world.
