The Padma Bridge is set to be inaugurated officially later this month, marking the successful completion of one of the biggest projects the country has ever undertaken. The process to get to this point, albeit riddled with complications, has held a ton of promise -- not only for the improved road communication system, but for the overall development of the country. With so much of our resources and time invested in this dream project, our collective expectations for rewarding returns are but natural.
To that end, the fact that transport owners in the Shariatpur district have already made plans for new bus services for the Padma Bridge is encouraging. An estimated Tk300 crore has been invested in the construction of new buses, with the work already commencing in order to be operational from the very day of the inauguration of the bridge.
A project of this scale is anticipated to bring in more investment for the country, creating new opportunities for other avenues of development to be explored, and such immediate planning for spin-off projects is certainly the right step forward.
However, it is important to note that rapid projects as such may not ensure the quality required for a sustainable system to be put in place. The quality of inter-region buses is known to be subpar at best, some even leaning towards dangerously unusable. This could not only endanger passengers, but will also prove to be a setback in terms of our expenditure and the proper use of our investment.

We must not be hasty. We must exercise caution, and proceed with thorough planning and careful implementation.
The completion of the Padma Bridge offers hope for the transport sector to recover from the financial blow it received due to the pandemic, and also grow further to match our developmental aspirations. In addition, it can attract investors for the country, both domestic and international, for which the relevant authorities must pay close attention and approach the matter carefully.
Padma Bridge promises to open doors for us, and it is crucial that we make calculated decisions to reap its benefits accordingly.
