It is imperative that coastal countries make good use of their seaports. A significant amount of global business is still conducted via the waterways, so gearing towards the efficient handling of seaports is imperative in modern times.
As such, it is good to see that the Mongla Port is buzzing with business amid development work. According to port authorities, 15 projects have been implemented for the development of the port in the past 11 years. Nine more development projects are currently underway -- from projects that will monitor the movement and safety of domestic and foreign ships arriving in the port and projects to meet the demand for safe and potable water for ocean-going vessels and port offices. Work is also underway in order to increase the capacity and handling of the port, something that should result in the port being able to handle 3,000 ships, 30,000 vehicles, and 800,000 containers by 2025-30.
This is all very encouraging, and the right way to go about developing our ports to fulfill their full potential. To reiterate, a large chunk of global business is still handled via waterways. Bangladesh already has a strategic position when it comes to the Bay of Bengal. Improving our infrastructure when it comes to this regard means that we can take better advantage of our position. We have lofty ambitions, and as such, it is good that the authorities are being pro-active and working on both present and future needs.
