A timely introduction

Bangladesh’s plan to introduce paternity leaves is a move that is being rightly praised by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Paternity leave is still a concept of debate rather than a given reality in many developed countries, and Bangladesh’s undertaking of such a progressive and forward-looking idea is a move that deserves international recognition.

This is not just about breaking gender norms, the presence of both the father and mother is necessary in the life of an infant. The introduction of a paternal leave policy also stands to greatly improve our economy in the long run as well: A new report by ILO on care work states that gaps in care services and policies have left hundreds of million workers with family responsibilities without adequate protection and support, and meeting these needs would create almost 300 million jobs.

As more and more sections of our country’s overall population are introduced into the workforce, this report is especially illuminating for our country. And given that Bangladesh’s long-term ambitions not only include economic prosperity but also social progress, the introduction of a paternity leave is more than welcome.

However, this is an initiative that should be implemented across the board.

The administration should see to it that there are no gaps during the implementation stage, and iterate upon progressive ideas like this in the days to come. The world is changing for the better with each passing day, and we as a nation have to adapt with the times.
