Research drives a nation

There is no doubting the fact that institutions of higher education are only as good as the research they conduct, and it is remaining proactive and up-to-date with the latest research that cultivates excellence at universities.

It is no coincidence at all that the best colleges and universities across the world are also those that focus their efforts on conducting research.

To that end, it is extremely disappointing to learn that, year on year, our universities not only fail to prioritize research, but, as annual report data of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2020 shows, on average spend a measly 1% of the allocated amount, which is simply unacceptable.

Of course, spending money on sub-par research is not the solution, but with Bangladesh harbouring ambitious goals, and with the Fourth Industrial Revolution sure to disrupt the world, the country would do well to start focusing on bettering its institutes of higher education -- with improving research being among the foremost steps the authorities must undertake.

Not only does this include being able to spend the allocated funds for research purposes, but create a favourable environment, and incentivize our university teachers to be excited about conducting research.

Too many academics leave the country, intending to conduct their research abroad where they feel more appreciated and supported, and it's about time we changed this narrative, and created the right situation for them to conduct research within Bangladesh.

Make no mistake about it, if Bangladesh is to achieve all that it wants to achieve in the upcoming decades, then a renewed focus on research at our universities will have to play a significant part.
