Agriculture has always been at the heart of the nation’s economy, and as such, it is entirely warranted that developing the agricultural sector remain a priority for us.
To that end, modernizing and mechanizing the production process is our best bet. In addition to constantly upgrading the equipment used, it is imperative we constantly invest in newer farming methods and practices.
Hydroponic farming, for example, is an alternative that we should explore to the fullest. It not only expedites the production process, making it possible to farm in the limited spaces in urban landscapes and reduce waste and transport costs, but also results in healthier produce, mostly free of chemicals.
However, it is true that the initial cost of setting up such farms and bringing equipment up to date is quite high, and not at all feasible for individual farmers. Despite that, it is a necessary investment. Government initiative and action taken in this regard will go a long way towards ensuring that the production process is streamlined.
Similar to how the government subsidized purchase prices of machinery last year, farmers should be encouraged to take up these new agricultural methods that are likely to benefit all parties involved.
As the world charges forward, constantly developing newer and more efficient technology, we cannot afford to be left behind. For our agricultural sector to keep up with global demand and foreign markets, greater investments need to be made towards modernization.
