As the premier national university in Bangladesh, it is incumbent upon Dhaka University to hold its teachers to the highest standards, if not set the bar for all other universities.
Yet, the vice chancellor of DU seemed nonchalant, when approached, about the recent reports concerning the recruitment of faculty at his institution.
Not only did a number of new recruits fail to meet the minimum qualification requirements, there is clear evidence of nepotism as one of the recruits is the daughter of a current faculty member.
Educational institutions, especially universities, are the bedrock of our society; and teachers have the solemn and extremely critical responsibility of nurturing young minds and future leaders.
We cannot claim to be a nation with integrity if our oldest and most prestigious university violates its own rules and hires under-qualified teachers.
