It gives great hope to see that Bangladesh and the UK have joined hands in the fight against climate change, and are planning to sign a climate accord ahead of COP29. The plan is to put nature at the heart of climate action, which means realizing our shared, global responsibilities towards the conservation of biodiversity and eco-systems. This will give both countries a chance to avert, minimize, and address loss and damage.
Indeed, climate change is a global threat, and a single nation cannot solve the problem by itself. Partnerships are needed, and that is what COP tried to achieve, even though, sadly, these global summits get tied up in politics and other agendas, with actual climate goals getting left behind. But we have no choice, given that this planet is our only home. We must, then, push forward like never before, and exchange knowledge and expertise, work towards common goals, and identify practical solutions.
Bangladesh has very low per capita emissions compared to rich nations. Nevertheless, if we are to lead the way in climate action, we must do so by making the right changes and setting a good example. We should transition away from coal towards cleaner and more renewable forms of energy, which will not only reduce greenhouse gases, but will help the economy and create more jobs.
We can no longer afford to do things the old way; we cannot grow economically while destroying nature -- the price is simply too high. We should build as many partnerships as possible, and no matter how tall an order it seems, we need to do our bit to fight off the looming climate disaster.
