ED: Leave no one behind

While it is true that the Covid-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on all sectors of society, impacting almost every single one of us one way or another, there can be no doubting the fact that certain communities, marginalized either by socioeconomic status or on account of ethnicity, have experienced far more difficulty in the pandemic’s wake.

These vulnerable groups saw their income opportunities drastically reduce as a result of the pandemic, with the lockdowns, despite how necessary they have become, severely impacting their livelihoods and, subsequently, their incomes.

To that end, with the fiscal year coming to an end, and the national budget for FY2021-2022 soon to be formulated, it would be wise for the authorities concerned to address this disproportionate impact of the pandemic on marginalized communities most vulnerable to the pandemic, be it through strategic policy changes or further stimulus packages.

Experts have raised concerns over the income inequality the pandemic has brought with it, and have rightfully stressed on the need for having not only the right policies in place, but the intent and commitment to see them through. It is imperative that we ensure that these people are provided support so that they do not go hungry, while at the same time, creating a more favourable condition for possible future employment.

At such a difficult time as this, looking after those who need it the most is our duty as a nation and as Bangladeshis.
