When we came to realize that the coronavirus had found its way into the country, it was essential to go into lockdown and close certain institutions in order to ensure the health and safety of our citizens.
Since then, while we have opened up our country for the most part, but schools have remained shut down -- for good reason.
However, it is undeniable that children have lost out greatly during this period, and as one of the most vulnerable members of our society, it is our duty to ensure that they remain protected and continue receive the education they deserve.
In this regard, it is encouraging that directives have been issued by the government to ensure that government primary schools start taking preparations towards opening up schools once again.
Guidelines have already been sent so that these educational institutions take necessary action in compliance with health rules -- an important step towards ensuring the safety of children and of their family members.
Additionally, a short 30-day syllabus has already been prepared and would provide an avenue for school-children to minimize the loss they have experienced this past year and allow them to move forward to higher levels of education with the necessary knowledge.
We are pleased by assurances provided by the Bangladesh Government Primary School Head Teachers’ Association that they are prepared and can open up as soon as the directive is given, an encouraging sign that both our government and our schools are taking every step possible to minimize risks and prioritize education.
