This is unacceptable.
Exactly how many more deaths must we witness on our roads before the issue is finally tackled with the importance it deserves?
Our roads and highways are just as dangerous for passengers and pedestrians alike, as more than 1,000 people were killed and around 1,300 injured in 755 road accidents throughout the nation in the last two months alone.
The numbers were reported by Green Club of Bangladesh, based on the news reports from 24 national dailies, 12 local newspapers, and 10 online portals, as they paint a grim picture of the state of road accidents and related deaths in Bangladesh.
This grim streak continues: A recent spate of road accidents killed as many as 21 people in Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Feni, Mymensingh, and Dhaka -- nine of whom died in a single road crash in Habiganj.
It is astonishing how badly the administration is failing in protecting its own citizens, especially in cognizance of the massive movement we witnessed less than two years ago demanding safer roads for everyone in the country.
Time and again, we have appealed to the government for stricter, more effective measures when it comes to making our roads and highways safer, but the message is clearly getting lost in a sea of incompetence and corruption.
As we speak, unfit vehicles which clearly have no place on our roads are still being driven, while bus companies are running amok with impunity in their quest for the most profits with the least accountability.
This has gone far enough.
We have lost more than enough lives to road accidents, and it is high time that the government finally did something meaningful to protect the people it claims to serve.
