A short guide to travelling with a toddler

Toddling -- I mean, travelling -- with a toddler can be daunting, to say the least. It requires preparation and optimism of the highest order. Parents are a resourceful bunch, but even the best of us can unravel at the hands of a tantrummy toddler. That being said, travelling with young kids is well worth it.

I have always been a strong advocate for venturing out with babies and toddlers, whether it’s legging it to the mall (difficulty level: medium) or sitting through an eleven-hour plane ride (difficulty level: extreme). The joy of discovering the world through your children’s eyes is one of parenthood’s finest. It almost offsets all the hassles -- ‘almost’ being the keyword.

First thing to do is to prepare YOURSELF. Dress sensibly when travelling with little ones -- leave airport looks to celebs. Things to consider when choosing your wardrobe:

•    Dark colours to hide stains/breast leaks

•    Slip on and off shoes, particularly for airport security. Laces are a total no-no

•    Layers to take off/put on/cover sleeping baby

•    Comfy trousers/leggings

•    Backpacks

•    A change of clothes

Packing for children is the more arduous task. A rule of thumb would be to work out the least amount of equipment your toddler will need to stay comfortable and entertained, and then pack a bit heavier than that. If I have learnt anything about Parenting Tips 101, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. If you are flying, find out more about what your airline offers: how many items can you check in for your kids? Do they allow strollers/car seats?

Make a checklist for easy/efficient packing. Then tick them off as you go.

•    Collapsible stroller and/or baby wearing sling. Ergo 360 is a widely popular sling while Babyzen Yoyo strollers seem to be the rage these days (apparently it can fit in the overhead compartment of an airplane)

•    Diapering needs: pack wipes, diapers, rash cream aplenty

•    SNACKS SNACKS SNACKS. When you think, wait my little one can’t possibly eat all that, ignore yourself and pack some more. ALL THE RICE CAKES YOU CAN CARRY

•    Disposable bibs

•    Medicine and first aid supplies: bandage, Tylenol/Calpol, thermometer, nasal saline drops, insect repellants, etc

•    Distractions. Be creative with your arsenal: pacifiers, colouring books, stickers, books, flash cards, window clings et al

•    Toys, preferably the ones you don’t mind losing bits and bobs of

•    Lovie or comfort object. Every kid has his/her comfort toy (my son likes to lug around his coat even in summer). Make sure you don’t leave it at home

•    Disposable bags for all the soiled clothes, bibs etc

•    Small travel size toiletries

•    Clothes, sacks and shoes aplenty

•    Sippy cups, and some toddler friendly utensils

•    Weather appropriate wear: sun hats and sun screen/mittens and coats/bathing suit

•    Screens. Let’s be real, sometimes screen time is the only way to retain your sanity. Don’t hold yourself back should you need to

Travelling with young kids can be one of the most enriching experiences you can have as a family. Watching a toddler revel in the simple joys of life is enchanting. It humbles you and helps you believe in magic again. You’ll delight in their curiosity, their playfulness, their friendliness, and willingness to explore. There will be plenty of #momfails and #dadfails along the way but the memories you create will outlive all that.

Bon Voyage!
