Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, the premier cultural organisation of the country, celebrates its 40th founding anniversary through a two-day programme that will begin today.
The programme will be inaugurated through a function at 6pm today with the presence of Asaduzzaman Noor, minister for cultural affairs, Liaquat Ali Lucky, director general of BSA and many other cultural personalities. The second phase of today’s programme will feature renditions of patriotic songs, group dance recitals, acrobatic performances and releasing hot air balloon.
The academy was established under the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Act 1974, to practice and uphold local culture and to facilitate the artists. Now the Academy is functioning under the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Ordinance 1989.
Over the years the academy has been considered the main hub for theatre practice, especially after the establishment of National Theatre Hall in recent years. However, all kinds of cultural activities like dance, music, recitation and others also take place throughout every year. The academy also promotes many folk and traditional indigenous performing arts through different programmes. An ethno-cultural archive was launched recently with the aim to preserve the traditions of ethnic people in the counrty.
BSA regularly screens world classic and local quality films. Its National Art Gallery is mostly being used for large scale exhibitions. The adjacent plaza can be used for discussions, seminars and cultural functions. An auditorium having modern features has been opened recently at the Art Plaza.
