5th Bangla Blog Dibosh to be celebrated on a silent note

Throughout this year the term blogging has been used and abused in many different ways. No matter what has been said about the much hyped about term of the year, a blog by definition is a web platform where people express their personal opinions and views about anything of their interest.

For Bangladeshis, what could be more liberating than the freedom of being able to “blog” in their own mother language? It is not only a thing of immense pride but also a sign of our progress in science and technology as a nation.

It has been more than a decade since people started blogging in Bangla language. Syeda Gulshan Ferdous, acting CEO, somewhereinblog.net, the largest community of Bangla bloggers, told Dhaka Tribune about the birth of Bangla Blog Dibosh.

It started back in 2008 when Syeda realised the potential of freedom of expression in one’s native language. Soon she could convince intellectuals and literati about the need to observe a national day for these bloggers and Dr Anisuzzaman, Professor Emeritus of University of Dhaka, announced December 19 as the Bangla Blog Dibosh.

As years passed on, this day started to gain more momentum around the country and also abroad. On this day bloggers from different platforms of the country congregate on a single platform. Today, Bangla Blog Dibosh is observed in cities like New York, London, and many more.

On its fifth anniversary, writers and bloggers across the country will talk about the activities, success and scope of blogging in different online platforms and mass media. Posters about the day have been distributed in more than eight cities of the country to raise awareness about the growing community.

Although the community will not celebrate this year on a grand scale because of the current political instability, separate blog communities across the capital will observe the day in their own ways.
