IGCC screens Uday Shankar’s film Kalpana today

A screening of great Indian classical dancer late Uday Shankar’s 1948 film ‘Kalpana’ will be held at 6:30pm today at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Gulshan-1 in the capital.

IGCC in association with Shadhona A Center for Advancement of Southasian Culture is organising the show.

Kalpana, restored by Martin Scorsese’s World Cine Foundation, is a mesmerising tale narrated through dance recitals.

Kalpana’s autobiographical plot is interspersed with scenes from an imaginary world (kalpana) that exists only in the mind of the dancer. After a point, reality intertwines with the surreal, and it becomes difficult to separate one from the other. It is narrated almost entirely in dance form, with no less than 82 dance sequences piecing the film together.

Uday Shankar’s daughter Mamata Shankar, who is successfully carrying the legacy of his father by her skillful dancing, will be present at the occasion. The entry is free for all.
