Jatra Festival begins today at Shilpakala Academy

The third “Jatra-Utshob,” folk theatre festival, begins today 3pm at the Experimental Theatre Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. It is organised by the Department of Theatre and Film of BSS. Every day, four programmes will be showcased from 3pm to 8:30pm during the three day festival.

A total of twelve troupes out of twenty-three is selected to participate in the festival. It is organised in response to different troupe’s application for registration with the academy’s Theatre and Film Department as part of the government’s  project to develop the performing art.

The celebration will start with the staging of “Baharam Badshah” at 3pm by theatre troupe Doyel Opera, which is directed by Chand Biswas and written by Yunus Ali Kanai. “Mayer Chokhe Jol” by Dayam Jatra Unit, directed by M A Razzak will be performed at 4:30pm. Protima Opera is presenting “Manobi Debi” directed by Shadhon Sarker at 6pm and Shitalakkha Jatra Unit will present “Gunay Bibi” by Arifur Rahman at 7:30pm.

The second day performances will take place at the same time. The first show will be “Michael Modhusudan” by Jagorony Opera, “Anushondhan” by Chaituly Opera, “Laili-Majnur Prem” by Champa Opera, and “Komolar Bonobash” by Lima Jatra Unit.

On the last day of the festival, Royal Bengal Jatra Unit will present “Rakhal Bondhu,” “Doshshurani Phulon Debi” by Jamuna Nattya Sangstha, “Sekander Ali” by Deshary Opera and “Jibon Nodir Teer E” by Jony Opera will conclude the celebrations.

Professor Dr Afsar Ahmed, eminent actor S M Mohsin, Begum Sara Ara Mahmud, director of Drama and Film department and Milon Kanty De are the judges of this event.
