39th National Snooker Championship 2026 kicks off in Dhaka

The 39th National Snooker Championship 2026 is set to bring together the country’s leading cue sports players in one of the most prestigious snooker tournaments in Bangladesh.

Organized by the Bangladesh Billiards and Snooker Federation, the championship is hosted by the Dhaka Boat Club.

The tournament organizers on Thursday shared details of the event at a press conference held at the same venue.

Rubel Aziz, president of Dhaka Boat Club, attended the press conference as chief guest, while Brig Gen (Retd) Sharkar Md Samsuddin, president of the Bangladesh Billiards and Snooker Federation, was present as special guest.

The press conference was chaired by Dr Md Zahirul Islam. Also present were the club's member admin Nakib Sarkar Apu, member finance Syed Abu Solaiman, sports in-charge Monir Hossain Emon, and other EC members.

At the press conference, the organizers stated that this year’s edition features 183 players from 32 clubs from across the country.

The tournament offers attractive prize money, with the champion set to receive Tk100,000 and the runner-up Tk50,000. Each semi-finalist will get Tk20,000, while players making highest break of 50 or more will receive a special prize of Tk20,000.

The event is sponsored by Amber Group, with co-sponsorship from Eminence Sourcing and Rashid Group.

RC Cola and MUM are the beverage partners, and Impact PR is the media partner of this tournament.

Rubel Aziz, president of Dhaka Boat Club, said: “Organizing such tournaments regularly will further popularize cue sports in Bangladesh and provide talented players with a proper platform to showcase their abilities. However, the current VAT of around $3.5 per kilogram on importing snooker tables poses a challenge to the sport’s growth. Reducing this tax would make it easier for Bangladesh to establish itself on the global snooker stage.”

Sharkar Md Samsuddin, president of the Bangladesh Billiards and Snooker Federation said: “The main goal of the tournament is to prepare talented players to represent the country on the international stage. We hope this type of events would help produce more skilled and internationally competitive players in the future.”

Dr Md Zahirul Islam, chairman of the tournament committee, said: “The strong participation this year highlights the rising popularity of snooker in Bangladesh. Such initiatives are crucial to create a sustainable platform for emerging talent.
