IPCC panel: World’s ecosystems are in high danger

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said the world’s ecosystems are in high danger from the effects of global warming, drought, flood and cyclones.

This observation came from the IPCC’s 5th assessment report discussed yesterday at the city’s National Press Club auditorium.

The press conference, titled “IPCC’s AR5: how Bangladesh translates climate change and its vulnerabilities,” was jointly organized by IPCC, Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), Nature Conservation Movement (NACOM), Prokiti O Jibon Foundation and Lead, a worldwide non-profit organization.

The panel suggested that the government incorporate adaptation action into national development planning for the sustainable development outcomes.

It also stressed the need to include of all kinds of development activities including disaster management.

Earlier, on March 31, the IPCC published the final draft report-II which made a suggestion for policy makers.

Regarding the negative impacts of climate change, Bangladesh will mostly face disruption in agriculture and water sector caused by flood, drought and salinity, according to several earlier reports of the IPCC.

The country has formulated a detailed policy titled Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (BCCSAP) in 2009.

Under the policy, the government formed two funds named Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund (BCCTF) with its own resources and Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund (BBCRF) with the contributions from development partners.
