The Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) has taken a decision to set up 50 closed circuit cameras at some key points in the city aimed at combating crimes such as mugging.
The SMP also decided to set up a police station in the outskirts of the city to bring law and order under control.
Commissioner of SMP Mijanur Rahman said this while addressing Opening House Day of Shahporan police station yesterday. He said incidents of mugging has significantly increased in the city. In recent time a good number of mobile phones, motor cycles, and CNG-run auto rickshaws had been robbed.
Although law enforcers are sincere about their job, but they could not recover most of the robbed items because of a lack of logistical support, he said expressing hope that if the entire city is brought under vigilance by closed circuit cameras, the level of crime would decrease by a large extent.
Besides, the law enforcement will also get support from the cameras to monitor any accident, political programme and the movement of people, he said.
“We are working on budgeting the project and other related work,” he said.
There are six police stations in the city – Kotwali police station, Dakshin Surma police station, Jalalabad police station, Airport police station, Shahporan police station and Moghol Bazar police station, Mijanur Rahman said, adding that the SMP also has plans to set up a police station at Naksha, in the outskirt of the city, to strengthen monitoring of the law enforcement agencies.
