Intel, AMD to promote x86 innovation

Two of the dominant processor producers, Intel and AMD, have created an advisory group to accelerate innovations of x86 architecture.

The move can result from the rising demand for ARM-based chips in recent years.

Laptops equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X arm processor have been an instant hit since availability this June.

Apple is already one step ahead by switching to Apple silicon in 2020 Macbooks, now expanding to Mac mini, iMac, and even Mac Pro desktops.

Intel and AMD’s x86 architecture made the modern personal computer possible in the 1970s.

The architecture was the only option for consumers before being challenged by ARM processor makers at the beginning of the decade.

AMD chair and CEO Lisa Su said: “Establishing the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group will ensure that the x86 architecture continues evolving as the compute platform of choice for both developers and customers.”

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said: “We are on the cusp of one of the most significant shifts in the x86 architecture and ecosystem in decades – with new levels of customization, compatibility and scalability needed to meet current and future customer needs.”

Although, Microsoft is in the process of making Windows work better with ARM processors, and they've also joined the advisory group.

Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO said: “x86 has been foundational to modern computing for over four decades, and we want to ensure it continues to evolve and benefit everyone going forward.”

Along with them, Broadcom, Google Cloud, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Oracle, and Red Hat joined the advisory group.
