Tech rivals AMD and Intel have combined forces to bring processors with enhanced graphics capabilities to combat Nvidia’s lead in the market.
Last Monday, archrivals Intel Corporation and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced joining their forces to challenge their mutual competitor, Nvidia Corporation with their new Core H processors to be released in the first quarter of 2018, as per reports from
the Wall Street Journal.
Not so long ago, Nvidia - their mutual rival - accounted for 80% of the GPU market. Reports from
the INQUIRER revealed Intel has been targeting Nvidia’s GPUs with their Nervana AI chips, while, AMD has been gaining lead with its Vega-based graphics cards.
Intel is currently leading the project, although both the companies helped engineer the new Core H processors. The company claims, there is 50% reduction in the silicon footprint in the new chip, to the standard discrete components on a motherboard and the new processors will also incorporate a custom graphics processor from AMD, as well as its own RAM.
This means, not only will the processor provide graphics-level performance for playing games, editing photos or videos, but will also help free up space by using less slots in a motherboard, thus allowing laptop makers to install better batteries and fan designs. Simply put, the size of ultrabooks with the power of a budget gaming computer.
Scott Herkelman, vice president and general manager of AMD's Radeon Technologies Group, said: "Together we are offering gamers and content creators the opportunity to have a thinner-and-lighter PC capable of delivering discrete performance-tier graphics experiences in AAA games and content creation applications.”
Intel-AMD’s agreement is wholly based on the cutting edge Embedded Multi-die Interconnect Bridge (EMIB). This bridge allows the AMD GPU and Intel microprocessor to communicate more effectively by combining the capabilities in one single chip, with enough juice to smoothly run triple A games.
The new Core H processor is the first to use EMIB in the consumer market. This is a significant development in the tech world that not only benefits the gaming enthusiasts but has the potential to improve mainstream laptops, notebooks, tablets and even phones in the future.
