Six foods that may help control weight and boost skin health

Nutritionists have cautioned against starving or crash dieting to lose weight quickly, saying such methods can leave skin dry, dark, and dull instead of healthier.

Rather than drastically cutting food intake, nutritionists recommend adding specific nutrient-dense foods to the daily diet that help manage weight while also benefiting the skin.

Cucumber and lemon water

A cucumber and lemon drink can be a good way to start the day. Cucumber is low in calories and high in water content, while the vitamin C in lemon supports collagen production. Together, they provide hydration and nutrients as a healthy addition to the diet.

Plain yogurt

Plain yogurt can be included at breakfast. Its probiotics benefit digestive health, and its protein can help keep the stomach full for longer, reducing the tendency to snack unnecessarily or overeat. The lactic acid in yogurt is also used in skin care.

Green tea

One to two cups of green tea can be added to the daily diet. Its antioxidants support the body's metabolism and may help reduce oxidative stress.

Chia seeds and flaxseeds

Chia seeds and flaxseeds can help with weight control. Both contain fiber and healthy fats, and when soaked in water, they can help keep the stomach full for longer. Their omega-3 fatty acids also help retain skin moisture.

Tomato and carrot

Tomatoes and carrots can be added to salads or soups as low-calorie foods. Carrots contain beta-carotene and tomatoes contain lycopene, both of which act as antioxidants and may offer the skin some protection from sun damage.

Almonds and walnuts

In the afternoon, a handful of almonds or walnuts can replace fried snacks. These nuts contain healthy fats, protein and micronutrients. The vitamin E in almonds and other nutrients in walnuts also benefit skin health.

Nutritionists cautioned that adding a few foods to the diet alone will not produce rapid weight loss. Total calorie intake, physical activity and sleep also play important roles in weight management. Cutting down on excess sugar, refined flour and deep-fried food is equally necessary, they said, adding that adequate water intake and regular sleep also support overall health.

Instead of starving before festivities to lose weight quickly, nutritionists recommend a moderate, nutrient-rich diet that supports both weight management and skin health.
