Ah, February – the month of romance. Of over-the-top gestures, and declarations of love that will last... an eternity (?). But do you know what DOES last an eternity? Strong, female friendships.
You pick your girl gang, and you’re set for a lifetime. You know they’ll be there, be it for 3am calls to rant about boy problems, or just to tell you that you are beautiful and loved. So, to celebrate these women in our lives, we bring you – Galentine’s Day!
The idea of Galentine’s Day was first introduced by Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) on the hit sitcom Parks and Recreation. In an episode of the second season, she introduced the idea of a day dedicated to the gal pals, complete with brunch and mimosas, and a whole lot of appreciation for the ladies who support us, come what may.
This, of course, in no way entails holding a grudge against Valentine’s Day; hence, traditionally, it is celebrated on February 13, so there’s plenty of time to be spent with your significant other.
So what can you do to express your gratitude to these ladies who stand as constants in your life? The possibilities are endless. You can opt for a spa day together: it’s sure to lift your moods. Better yet, indulge in some retail therapy. Nothing says friendship like helping each other choose clothing or make-up to accentuate your already beautiful selves.
Or, stick to the classic: a pyjama party. It may not involve the overly glamourized pillow fights, but you know you’ll end up pouring your hearts out to each other at 4am, and strengthen the bond even further.
Whatever you choose to do, remember to appreciate your girlfriends, and remind them just why their presence in your life makes such a big difference. As Leslie Knope says, “It’s only the best day of the year”, so make the most of it!
