5 refreshing and versatile ways to enjoy mangoes

As summer rolls in, complaints about heatwaves start pouring in too. However, the sweet side of summer is undoubtedly the arrival of mangoes.

Taking centre stage in our kitchens and hearts, mangoes are succulent, versatile and a true seasonal delight. Bursting with flavour, these fruits offer a refreshing distraction from the summer heat, and their culinary potential is boundless.

While mangoes are incredible on their own, there are many delightful ways to enjoy this beloved fruit.

Refreshing beverages

Blend ripe mango chunks with yogurt, a splash of orange juice and a handful of ice and tada! You have a nice glass of smoothie.

If you would rather go for something else, chilled green mango juice can be a refreshing vitamin-packed treat as well.

Or get some fresh mint leaves and lime wedges along with mango puree as well as some soda. This mango mojito mocktail is sure to be a hit.

Dried mango bars

It is difficult to imagine a summer without dried mango bars made by mothers. They are a chewy, sweet yet tangy snack that is better when made at home.

Start by peeling and slicing ripe mangoes. Boil the slices until they are soft, then blend them into a smooth puree with spices. Spread the puree on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and dry it under the sun for several days.

Mango rice

Popularly known as “Aam dudh bhaat”, this is a classic way to enjoy mangoes during the summer.

If summer and Ramadan coincide (as it has for the last few years), this is a popular dish to have for Sehri as well for something sweet and nutritious.

A similar dish is mango sticky rice which is a mix of tender glutinous rice and a sweetened coconut milk sauce apart from ripe mango slices.

Frozen treats

Mango ice cream is a classic favourite. Or you can just combine ripe mangoes with vanilla ice cream, an indulgent delight that is hard to resist.

For a lighter option, try going for gelato. Gelatos are on the rise in Dhaka and are attempting to give strong competition to ice cream. They provide a smooth, dense texture with an intense mango flavour, achieved by slow churning and a lower fat content.

If you are looking for a quick and easy homemade treat, try making mango popsicles by blending fresh mango puree with a bit of lime juice and honey, pouring the mixture into moulds and freezing until solid.

Mango chutney

Made from a combination of diced mangoes, vinegar, sugar, and spices, mango chutney strikes the perfect balance between sweet and tangy with a hint of spice.

You can devour a good hot plate of Shingaras with this chutney, or use it as a glaze for vegetables and meats. With its versatility and bold flavour, mango chutney can elevate culinary creations with a touch of tropical flair.
