Dry skin in winter: How to manage it

As soon as winter sets in, you may notice itching on your cheeks and forehead. Don’t be alarmed by this sudden change. Dry, flaky skin is a very common problem during the colder months, but with a few simple steps, it can be kept under control.

Here are some easy and effective ways to prevent dry skin. You’ll need to invest a little time and take regular care—otherwise the skin may crack.

  1. Use lukewarm water daily. Make sure the water is not too hot. Excessively hot water strips the skin of its natural oils, which increases dryness and flakiness. This can make the problem worse.
  2. Try a mild cleanser. Avoid strongly scented soaps or face washes that contain alcohol. Gently exfoliate at the beginning, then use your face wash.
  3. Apply moisturiser while the skin is still damp. Don’t wait for your skin to dry completely. Applying cream within 2 to 3 minutes after bathing or washing your face helps retain moisture for longer.
  4. Aloe vera, honey or oatmeal masks help soothe and soften the skin.

There are many types of moisturisers available on the market. During winter, creams or lotions containing hyaluronic acid, glycerine, ceramides, squalane or shea butter work particularly well.

Remember, healthy skin requires more than just external care—you must nourish it from within. Drink plenty of water, and eat foods rich in omega-3 (such as fish and flaxseed), vitamin E and vitamin C.

Also, avoid over-exfoliating, taking long hot showers, and using alcohol-based or heavily fragranced cosmetics. Don’t keep your room heater at a very high temperature, as it dries out the air.
