Prof Dr Md Sharfuddin Ahmed, vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), has warned that taking painkillers at will can cause damage to various organs of the body, including the kidneys.
He made the remarks at a seminar on "Low Back Pain" at BSMMU on Sunday morning, reports Bangla Tribune.
He said: "There are many side effects to painkillers. Radiation and heat therapy can be given to cure pain in addition to certain doses of medicine. Lastly, the pain is reduced through surgery.
“As an example, low back pain can be cured by physical exercise, application of certain amount of medicine and latest operation to cure low back pain. However, in accordance with the rules and regulations, it is important to focus on curing or controlling the pain.”
According to the seminar, most of the back pain is common. 90% of low back pain patients get better with rest and physical activity. Most low back pain can be cured by following the rules.
Apart from this, back pain can be cured through medical management and physical management.
The speakers mentioned that steroids should not be used to treat pain as it can harm other parts of the body.
Like the developed world, chloroscopy and ultrasound guided interventions are performed in Bangladesh. This avoids surgery and also benefits the patients financially, they said.
