The thing is, these things are rarely true. Yes, if you approach a street dog, it might bite you but, despite what people say, dogs are not instinctive, spiteful beasts that attack anything that moves. Street dogs always have a reason, maybe it deemed you a threat or maybe it has a litter of puppies nearby. A dog will nearly always growl in warning before attacking. And just because some dogs have rabies doesn't mean all dogs do, In fact only 6% of all dogs in Bangladesh have rabies!
It is true though that there are too many dogs in Dhaka, and sometimes they can cause problems. This is why the DSCC's (Dhaka south city corporation) Mayor has decided to relocate the dogs to another district outside Dhaka.
The problem is, dogs are highly territorial animals, and the relocated dogs will be attacked. The vacant territories will be almost immediately filled with new packs and the only thing that’ll have changed, will be that the relocated dogs are injured or possibly dead.
However, there is a better way to curb the dog population. The answer is to neuter or spay the stray dogs. To those who don't know, neutering or spaying is a small operation that prevents the dogs from having puppies. Other countries use this tactic all the time! America uses the TRN (trap, nuetor, release) strategy for cats and our neighbor India deemed it illegal to relocate strays.
Here in Bangladesh there are people who help the strays this way. In fact, there is already an amazing animal shelter called Obhoyaronno that is taking street dogs, vaccinating them, spaying/neutering them and then releasing the animals back into their homes. This was possible due to the funding by DNCC (Dhaka North City corporation) In fact, it has been done to over 3500 dogs so far!
Most people don't know this and they are unknowingly killing innocent strays. If you care about the lives of dogs, then speak out, spread awareness and save the strays.
