‘Oedipus Rex’ adaptation staged at Shilpakala Academy

Drishtipat Natyadal staged an adaptation of “Oedipus Rex”, titled “Raja Himadri”, at Shilapkala Academy. The play was presented on 4th July, 7pm in the evening. 

Among the three ancient Greek tragedians, Sophocles is the most famous, and his work is studied by Literature and Drama majors all over the world. His most famous work is “Oedipus Rex”, in which the Oedipus, the main character, unintentionally kills his father and commits incest with his mother. The play is driven by his ignorance about these facts, which are revealed towards the end, driving him mad. 

Drishtipat Natyadal frequently focuses on the liberation war, and the struggles of the underprivileged. To entertain a more global audience and to bring internationally known plays to their local audience, Drishtipat has recently started staging adaptations, among which there are many famous French and German plays.

“Raja Himadri” has been staged in two international theatre festivals of India, and in various locations of Bangladesh. The adaptation and the direction for this play is given by Dr. Khondoker Tazmi Nur, who also plays the character of Raja Himadri. Odhora Priya plays Rani Indrani, who represents Jocasta of “Oedipus Rex.”
