Stocks close flat with volatility

Stocks finished flat amid volatility yesterday, as late profit-booking wiped off some of the early gains.

The market swung between positive and negative in the morning.

The benchmark DSEX ended at 4,409 with a marginal rise of almost 6 points or 0.2%, extending its modest rally for the fourth straight session. It hit highest 4,423 in the final session and lowest 4,382 in the morning session.

However, the Shariah index DSES dropped 1 points or 0.2% to 1,006. The comprising blue chips DS30 inched down nearly 2 points or 0.2% to close at 1,616.

Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) Selective Categories Index, CSCX, saw fractional gain of 0.06 points to 8,401.

Trading activities remained slow as the total turnover at DSE stood at Tk300 crore, which was 10.3% lower over the previous session.

Among the major sectors, non-banking financial institutions posted the highest gain of 1.5%, followed by food that rose 0.6%. The other large cap sectors including telecommunication, power, banks and pharmaceuticals closed in red.

Gainers outpaced losers, as out of 294 issues traded, 152 closed positive, 104 negative and 38 remained unchanged.

IDLC Investments said FY2013-14 is close to its end and the bourse observed the June-impact, lately.

It said most of the individual investors started positioning on the hope of getting tax rebate on their income.

“But, this rebate seeking money flow was out-weighed by the inactivity of large investors, leading to lower turnover.”

Lanka Bangla Securities said the recent gains in the market can be called volatile. Only few fundamental stocks grasped the interest of investors, which reverted intra-day loss in index to a meager gain in the last trading hour, it said.

“Market resilience remained weak owing edginess hovering around the aftermath of post-budget economic condition on capital market.”

Beximco Ltd was the most traded stock of the session with turnover of Tk24 crore changing hands.

It was followed by Lafarge Surma Cement, Grameenphone, United Airways, Square Pharmaceuticals, Bangladesh Shipping Corporation and Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Ltd.
