Week-long income tax fair kicks off Tuesday

Finance Minister AMA Muhith is scheduled to inaugurate the fair of Dhaka at the under-construction building of National Board of Revenue (NBR) at Agargaon in Dhaka, said NBR sources.

The NBR is organising the fair in Dhaka, for the first time, in its own building premises.

It is mentionable that although the NBR usually organised the week-long national income tax fair across the country on September 16-22 every year, this year it is holding the fair from November 1 and it will continue in coming days.

Sources said from now on, NBR will also observe the National Income Tax Day on November 30, instead of the previous September 15. The last day of submission of income tax returns is now November 30, which earlier was September 30.

The income tax fair will continue for seven days at the divisional headquarters while four days at the district headquarters, according to NBR.

The income tax fair will be held in a total of 150 venues including 86 upazila venues. The fair will be organised for two days in 29 upazilas while mobile income tax fair will be observed at 57 upazilas for one day.

He also said the fair will provide one-stop services including registration of electronic taxpayer’s identification number (eTIN), submission of income tax returns and online payment facilities.

Taxpayers will be able to submit their income tax returns online from the fair. The initiative is being introduced experimentally as part of NBR’s digitisation of activities.

The taxpayers have to submit their income tax returns by November 30, the new deadline. If any taxpayer seeks time-extension, he would have to pay interest on it as well, if accepted.

The board had earned income tax worth Tk2035.32 crore from the tax fair last year, followed by Tk1,675 crore in 2014, Tk1,117crore in 2013, Tk831 crore in 2012, Tk414 crore in 2011 and Tk113 crore in 2010.

Around 758,000 visitors received services last year while 161,000 submitted returns, according to NBR data.

Separate booths for women, disabled people and senior citizens would be placed in the fair. The fair will remain open for the visitors from 10am to 5pm.
