The National Board of Revenue yesterday crossed its last year’s collection from the nationwide week-long income tax fair as the board has bagged over Tk1315.47 crore from the fair in the last six days, NBR data shows.
From September 16 to yesterday, the board collected Tk1315.47crore from the fair through providing services to 5.45 lakh taxpayers and service seekers across the country.
Last year, the central tax authority collected Tk1,117.40 crore in income tax from the fair through providing different services to 5.10 lakh people and the board had received tax returns from around 1.32 lakh taxpayers.
According to the latest data, the NBR has collected Tk1,315.47 crore, around Tk200 crore more than the last years collection in last six days.
The board was able to register 22,039 people with the electronic taxpayers identification number (eTIN) including 12,841 new and 9,198 taxpayers have replaced their old 10 digit TIN with the eTIN. The board has received returns from 1,14,770 people in the last six days.
Though the NBR was yet to announce the official target from the fair, tax officials said the NBR is eying to collect Tk1,500crore from the week-long fair, which they are expecting to be surpassed by today, the closing day of the fair. The NBR has been organising the fair since 2010 to motivate people to pay tax and get tax-related services at one single venue.
As the previous days, the NBR officials have struggled to provide services for the taxpayers in all fair venues as around 1 lakh taxpayers are taking services from the taxmen every day, tax officials said.
They said the general strike and inclement weather across the country did not bar people from participating in the fair as they served a huge crowd in almost every venue.
The NBR served 98,840 people yesterday in the fairs held in 30 districts including the seven divisional headquarters.
A total of 2,046 people have registered for eTIN as the new taxpayers while 1,456 old taxpayers took eTIN replacing their old ones. The NBR bagged over Tk218.48crore from 24,031 returns submitted as of yesterday.
The fifth nationwide income tax fair is set to conclude today.
As like the previous six days, the NBR will assist the existing taxpayers to register with Electronic Taxpayers Identification Number, pay tax, file returns and encourage prospective taxpayers to get involved with the taxation system in all the fair venues. The fair remains open for the visitors from 10am to 5pm.
