Inflation falls to 9.74% in June

The general point to point inflation rate in June fell slightly to 9.74%, a 0.20% drop from the previous month, according to data released on Monday by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

The country recorded an inflation rate of 9.94% in May, the highest in a decade, the BBS data mentioned.

Food inflation stood at 9.73% in June, an increase from 9.24% in May and non-food inflation hit 9.6%, down from 9.96% in the previous month.

According to BBS data, inflation was 10.10% in March 2012 and fell to 9.93% the next month. Since then, inflation has never surpassed double digits.

A 9.74% inflation rate means that a person who purchased goods worth Tk100 in May 2022 will have to spend Tk107.74 in May of the current year to buy the same product.

Inflationary pressures have risen sharply, posing a substantial challenge to Bangladesh's economy by putting further strains on people's purchasing power.

According to the most recent BBS data, the price of rice, pulses, oil, salt, fish, meat, vegetables, spices, and tobacco products has risen, as has the rate of food inflation.

The costs of housing, furniture, household items, medical care, transportation, and educational resources have all risen dramatically. As a result, the rate of inflation has risen.
