Jamaat-Shibir men scare off global knitwear buyer

A global buyer of Knitwear products left Bangladesh without placing order as he was assaulted by Jamaat-Shibir activists in the city on Saturday.

Being frightened by the attack, the buyers immediately returned to the hotel they had been staying and decided to leave the country without placing order, said a statement of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA).

The Spanish buyer came under attack at Merul Badda in the city, when he was going to Fatullah in Narayanganj, to place order at a factory owned by BKMEA President Selim Osman.

Selim Osman said the buyer, who purchased knitwear goods worth $40m every year from Bangladesh, came here about a week ago for a big deal.

Meanwhile, a police constable was injured during a procession brought out by Jamaat-e-Islami and Shibir members in the capital’s Progoti Shoroni area in Badda on Saturday morning.

The injured policeman was Constbale Abdul Ali, driver of a police pickup.

Sources said Jamaat and Shibir members vandalised five to six private cars around 9am.

Abdul Ali was injured when Jamaat-Shibir men hurled bricks at the police vehicles that went to spot to stop the activists from vandalising personal property.

Police officials fired blank shots and tear shells to bring the situation under control.
