JMI to import 12,500 tonnes of sugar for TCB

JMI Export Import Company Ltd, a concern of JMI Group, will import 12,500 tonnes of sugar worth Tk65.98 crore from Brazil and supply it to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh.

The corporation will sell sugar to low-income groups at a subsidized rate.

In a meeting chaired by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, the cabinet committee on public purchase on Thursday announced JMI as the winner of a contract under the open tender method.

The decision was taken at a time when the sugar prices hit a record high in the country.

TCB data showed that prices of sugar have risen 22% to Tk110-115 per kg from Tk90-95 a month ago.

The present prices of sugar were 45% higher year-on-year.

Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Syed Mahmud Khan briefed the media virtually about the procurement decisions after the meeting.
