Speaking at a press conference Robiul Alam, secretary general to the Bangladesh Meat Merchant Association said: “We have suspended our strike out of consideration but we fear local goons and thugs will assault us because we stood up to their intimidation this time.”
They asked for security from the Home Ministry during the press briefing during a meeting with Commerce Ministry additional secretary Munsi Shahidul Haque who is now in charge as secretary.
Munshi Shahidul Haque assured the traders, saying:“We will get support from the Home Ministry to provide security for the meat merchants. The concerned authority will also monitor the market to make sure no extortion demands are made.”
The strike had been called on February 13 with a four-point demand which includes stopping any and all additional duty by cattle market lease holder.
