Default loans up by 29,391C in 3 months

Default loans in Bangladesh’s banking sector reached a record high of Tk211,391 crore at the end of June earlier this year. 

During the June quarter (April-June), default loans increased by Tk29,391 crore, 16.14% higher than the previous three months, according to the latest data from the Bangladesh Bank. 

Earlier, as of March this year, the amount of defaulted loans stood at Tk182,000 crore, which was also a record high at the time.

As of June, the total disbursed loans amounted to Tk1,683,000 crore, while default loans of Tk211,391 crore amounted to 12.56% of that total.

Default loans stood at only Tk22,000 crore in 2009 when the Awami League won the first of four consecutive general elections.
