Default loans rose by 10,964C in Q1'23

Default loans in Bangladesh have risen by the end of the first quarter (January-March) of this calendar year by Tk10,964 crore, which bankers pointed out as a result of withdrawal of loan moratorium facilities. 

The total amount of default loans stood at Tk131,620 crore at the end of March, which was Tk120,656 crore in December of the previous year, Bangladesh Bank data shows.

The non-performing loans (NPLs) in the banking sector increased 9% from three months ago and 16% from a year earlier, data from the Bangladesh Bank showed.

The ratio of NPLs in the banking sector stood at 8.8% of the outstanding loans amounting to Tk1,496,346 crore as of March this year.

The percentage of default loans was 8.16% in December and 8.53% in March last year.
