The government is going to confiscate the money of fugitive Major (dismissed) Shariful Haque Dalim - convicted for assassinating Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman - deposited at the Sonali Bank.
Dalim was allotted a five katha plot in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on April 26, 1987. Later he mortgaged the land and building with Sonali Bank Cantonment branch to take a loan of Tk1.10cr in 1994.
He was dismissed from the army in 1996 when Awami League-led government began trial proceedings of killing of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Twelve people, including Dalim, were found guilty in the murder case and five of them were hanged in January 2010. Six other killers, including Dalim are fugitives hiding abroad. One killer, Aziz Pasha, died in Zimbabwe of natural causes.
To realise the Tk1.10cr loan amount of Major Dalim, Sonali Bank authorities sold his plot and building for Tk1.77 crore, as per instructions of the Artho Rin Adalat. After the loan repayment, a total of Tk66,94,028 remains deposited in the Sonali Bank as sundry deposit.
On September 30, 2016, the parliament unanimously adopted a resolution to confiscate all movable and immovable assets of the convicted killers of Bangabandhu and the war criminals.
Sonali Bank Deputy General Manager Md Zillur Rahman Siddique recently sent a proposal to confiscate the Tk66,94,028 sundry deposit under the provisions of 88 and 89 of Criminal Procedure Act 1898.
The Financial Institutions Division has already prepared a proposal for confiscation of the deposit and it will be placed before Finance Minister AMA Muhith for approval.
According to a Home Ministry Task-Force report, the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipokkho has found 10 katha land on Shat Mosjid Road and a four katha plot in Mohammadpur owned by the fugitive Dalim.
He reportedly has business interests in Africa. He was sentenced to death in absentia. Dalim currently has an Interpol warrant out on him.
