The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has launched the online income tax return (e-return) filing service for individual taxpayers for the 2026-2027 tax year.
The service came into effect from Tuesday (July 22).
At the same time, online filing of income tax returns has been made mandatory for general individual taxpayers.
In a press release on Tuesday, the NBR said that this initiative has been taken to make tax services easier, faster and more transparent.
Since the introduction of the e-return system in 2021, it has gained immense popularity among taxpayers.
A record 4.7 million individual taxpayers successfully filed their income tax returns online in the 2025-2026 tax year.
NBR believes that this has significantly increased the interest of taxpayers in receiving tax services digitally.
According to the special order of the NBR, all general taxpayers will have to file their income tax returns online.
However, senior taxpayers aged 65 years and above, physically disabled or special needs persons subject to a certificate, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, representatives of deceased taxpayers and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh can submit their returns on paper if they wish.
In addition, if a general taxpayer is unable to file their returns online due to complications related to registration in the e-return system, they will have the opportunity to file paper returns with the approval of the concerned Additional or Joint Tax Commissioner.
According to the NBR, taxpayers can pay taxes from home through various digital means including bank transfer, debit and credit cards, bKash, Rocket, Nagad, etc.
At the same time, if the return is prepared and submitted online with the correct information, an acknowledgement slip and income tax certificate can be collected immediately.
It has also been informed that if there is any problem in filing e-returns, necessary assistance will be available through the NBR's call center (09643717171) and other electronic means during office hours except on government holidays.
Meanwhile, the NBR has announced new incentives for filing returns within the stipulated time from the 2026-2027 fiscal year.
If the return is filed between July and September, taxpayers will get an incentive of up to 5% on the net tax payable, with a maximum limit of Tk25,000.
On the other hand, if the return is filed after September, this incentive will not be available.
If the return is submitted after December, additional tax will have to be paid.
Therefore, the National Board of Revenue has made a special appeal to taxpayers to file income tax returns within the stipulated time.
