Finance minister: Special drive planned to recover laundered money

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has announced a renewed initiative to recover money laundered abroad, pledging stronger enforcement measures and enhanced international cooperation.

The announcement came during the presentation of the proposed national budget for FY2026-27 in parliament on Thursday.

The minister proposed a budget of Tk938,000 crore, one of the largest in the country's history. The budget sets a revenue target of Tk695,000 crore, leaving a deficit of Tk243,000 crore, which the government plans to finance through domestic and foreign borrowing.

Speaking during the budget speech, the finance minister said effective steps had already been taken to facilitate the recovery of laundered assets and that efforts to strengthen cooperation with international partners would continue.

Analysts view the announcement as a significant signal of the government's commitment to combating corruption and illicit financial flows.
