DCCI: Expand tax net for raising tax contribution to GDP

The second edition of the ‘DCCI Journal of Business and Economic Policy’ and the ‘Tax Guide 2025-26’ published by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) have been unveiled.

Commerce Ministry Secretary Mahbubur Rahman unveiled the covers of the two books as the chief guest at a function organized at the DCCI Auditorium on Saturday (December 1).

The special guests at the function were Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh (PRI) chairman and DCCI Journal editor-in-chief Zaidi Sattar and National Board of Revenue (NBR) member (tax management and human resource management) GM Abul Kalam Kaikobad.

DCCI president Taskin Ahmed said that for the past four decades, the organization has been publishing the ‘DCCI Tax Guide’ to update its members on the tax system.

He emphasized expanding the tax net, full automation of the tax payment process, simplification of policies and reforms to increase the contribution of taxes to GDP.

He further said that DCCI continues to formulate evidence-based research and policy recommendations for the development of the private sector and the national economy. The new edition of the recently published journal includes research on macroeconomics, skill development, international trade, LDC transition, import-export management, revenue and monetary policy, which he hoped would be helpful in policymaking.

Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman said: “Despite development activities, our economy has not yet reached the desired goal.”

He called on DCCI to play a more active role in research activities and said that research on trade-related issues, especially ‘Rule of Origin’, can accelerate policy reforms.

Zaidi Sattar said that some recent reports have raised concerns about the risk of increasing poverty in the country.

Stating that this risk will be reduced only if employment increases, he advised to give importance to export-oriented industrialization.

At the same time, he also highlighted the need for rapid reforms in trade and investment policies. According to him, the DCCI Journal will play a valuable role in future economic planning.

NBR member GM Abul Kalam Kaikobad said that the online tax payment system is becoming popular.

“Already 2 million taxpayers have paid their taxes online, we hope this number will reach 5 million this year,” he added. He commented that the online system will reduce harassment and bring transparency in revenue management.

DCCI vice president Md Salim Solaiman and members of the board of directors were present at the event.
