Prices of chicken, fish rise in Dhaka’s kitchen markets

Prices of chicken, fish and some vegetables saw an upward trend in the Dhaka’s kitchen markets on Monday despite the government's repeated assurances of market stability during Ramadan.

Lemon and cucumber prices remained high as the previous day.

Meanwhile, chicken and mutton prices edged up, though beef prices remained unchanged.

Traders at Karwan Bazar, the capital’s largest vegetable hub, attribute the rising costs to higher demand during Ramadan, despite an adequate supply of most items.

Rahim Sarder, a vegetable wholesaler at Karwanbazar, told UNB that lemon and cucumber prices are expected to decrease gradually as supply improves.

He also said that newly arrived vegetables are selling at slightly higher prices but the prices of brinjal (eggplant) and tomato showed a slight decline compared to the last two days.

On Monday, the eggplant was selling at Tk70 to 110 per kg, brinjal (long) at Tk60 to 80 per kg, green chili at Tk60 to 70 per kg based on quality, bean at Tk60 per kg, tomato at Tk30 to 35 per kg, carrot at Tk35 to 40 per kg, potato at Tk20 to 30 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk100 to 120 a kg, okra at Tk80 to 90 per kg, cucumber at Tk60 to 80 per kg, sponge gourd at Tk80 per kg, arum at Tk80 to 90 kg, radish at Tk60 per kg, green papaya at Tk50 to 60 per kg, French bean at Tk100 to 120 per kg and snake gourd at Tk50 to 60 per kg.

The local variety onion was selling at Tk40 to 50 per kg, while the imported onion at Tk35 to 45 per kg.

Imported garlic's price also increased and was selling at Tk240 per kg and local garlic at Tk160 a kg.

The locally produced ginger was selling at Tk160 per kg while the imported one at Tk130 to 140 per kg.

The price of red lentil remained high and the fine variety of red lentil was selling at Tk150 per kg while the imported item (coarse variety) was selling at Tk110 per kg.

The prices of fish have increased by Tk20 to 50 per kg.

Among the fish- Puti was selling at Tk400 per kg, live puti at Tk500 kg,  mola at Tk500 a kg, cultivated koi at Tk220 to 250 a kg, Fali Chanda (Rupchada) at Tk1,200 a kg, Chanda small at Tk400 kg, walking fish (Shoal) at Tk500 to 600 per kg, Eel at Tk700 to 900 a kg, Meni at Tk500 a kg, sheat (boal) at Tk600 to 1200 per kg, Ek-thota (Kaitta fish) at Tk600 to 650 a kg, Coral fish at Tk600 to 700 per kg based on size, river Pangas at Tk500 per kg, cultivated Pangas at Tk150 to 220 per kg, Rajputi at Tk450 per kg, Tilapia at Tk240 kg and Ruhi at Tk350 to 400 per kg.

Beef is selling for Tk750 to 780 per kg and mutton at Tk1,150 to 1,200 a kg.

A medium size local chicken (cock) was selling at Tk500 to 600 per piece and hen at Tk450 to 500 per piece.

The boiler chicken's price stands at Tk190 to 220 per kg.
