Chapainawabganj's Sonamasjid Land Port might not dominate headlines like its larger counterparts, but it's silently catalyzing local prosperity.
Operated by a private company under a government-sanctioned public-private partnership (PPP), this port has transformed into a modern hub, driving local economic growth by directly and indirectly creating significant employment opportunities.
Managed by Panama Sonamasjid Port Link LTD, and with a change in management since 2019, the Sonamasjid Land Port has quietly become a cornerstone of the regional economy. It is leading the charge in regional development.
Since its inception in 2006, Sonamasjid Land Port has slowly become a trade hub, albeit quietly operating in the shadow of its more prominent land ports notably Benapole port in Jessore.
However, under the new private management of Panama Sonamasjid Port Link LTD since 2019, the port has undergone remarkable changes.
Led by its Managing Director Zahura Nawshaba, the port has embraced sustainable and ethical practices like rainwater harvesting and bolstered its fire safety measures, recognizing the inherent risks associated with transporting flammable goods, especially in light of the tragic Sitakunda fire of 2022.
Empowering communities, igniting growth
Beyond its operational footprint, Sonamasjid Land Port serves as a lifeline for local families, offering employment opportunities to 1500 workers engaged in loading and unloading operations. Speaking to these individuals, it was clear that the port is a cornerstone of their livelihoods. "I earn around Tk500-600 a day on average from doing this type of work; my family depends on it," shared one worker, underscoring the port's socio-economic impact.
Moreover, the port's presence has catalyzed ancillary businesses in the remote vicinity, as Indian drivers flock to procure necessities, injecting vitality into the local economy. This symbiotic relationship between the port and surrounding businesses underscores its role as a catalyst for broader economic prosperity.
As a remote district, the port has also opened up opportunities for women, offering more desk jobs this year—a sight not commonly seen in other ports.
Charting economic trajectory
The port's economic significance is further underscored by its financial performance over the years. This port has made a significant contribution to the country's economy, generating Tk618.9 crore in the last fiscal year (FY23) alone and Tk828.8 crore the fiscal year prior (FY22), marking the highest single-year revenue.
Meanwhile, at other land ports like the prominent Benapole land port, a considerable flow of travelers and goods is observed due to its proximity to major Indian cities. However, for specific commodities like onions and stones, Sonamasjid land port has significantly reduced transportation costs owing to shorter distances.
A glance at its revenue trajectory reveals a compelling narrative of growth and resilience:
The port's consistent revenue growth underscores its resilience amidst evolving market dynamics and underscores its pivotal role in driving economic prosperity in the region.
Navigating traffic challenges
Despite government projections envisioning a throughput of 600 trucks, on-ground observations reveal a reality far below expectations, with most truckers opting for the convenience of Benapole.
To address this discrepancy and unlock the port's full potential, ambitious plans are underway to enhance amenities and services. A modern resting area, cafeteria, and medical center are in the pipeline, poised to entice drivers and elevate the port's appeal as a preferred transit point.
Challenges
Challenges impeding the flow of trucks include the restrictive list of import goods. The government’s policy barred the import of various items such as duplex board, newsprint, craft paper, cigarette paper, various types of paper and paperboard, yarn, milk powder, juice, and tobacco (with the exception of tobacco leaf approved by reputable tax-paid tobacco companies), among others.
"I firmly believe that if these goods were allowed, our revenue could witness a significant boost," Salahuddin, the company’s COO, remarked.
However, the list permits the export of all types of goods.
As Sonamasjid Land Port continues its journey of evolution and expansion, it remains poised to emerge as a formidable force in northern Bangladesh's economic landscape.
With strategic investments, innovative initiatives, and unwavering commitment to sustainable growth, the port is not just a conduit for trade but a beacon of progress, illuminating pathways to prosperity for the region and beyond.
