After 23 years in the business, Timeout has solidified its status as an indispensable hub in Dhaka, cherished by residents of all age groups. The allure lies in the consistently excellent yet reasonably priced food and the evocative atmosphere. The menu showcases a diverse array of cuisines, ranging from mini Thai and Indian to Korean delights, providing a nostalgic trip down memory lane for patrons.
Sangita Ahmed, managing and founding partner at Timeout, expressed her fondness for the establishment as a place where people of all ages, not just those in their twenties, can recharge, reminisce about carefree youth, and eventually return with their own children. "I adore those stories," she remarked.
Food
In the realm of food, Timeout has carved a niche for itself with its Thai cuisine, distinguished by unique flavours and variety. According to Ahmed, it's not just authentic Thai; it's Timeout Thai – a distinctive culinary experience that sets it apart. One standout dish is the savoury top hat, resembling a miniature spring roll filled with veggies, prawns, and sweet corn. The deep-fried dough offers a delightful crunch, encapsulating a mouth-watering concoction.
Moving on, the Timeout-famous chicken basil leaf with fried rice promises a speechless dining experience. Prepared with a marinade of oyster sauce, bell pepper, shallots, soy sauce, and ginger, the dish delivers a savoury-spicy tang that complements the freshly made fried rice and a side of spicy sauce.
Our culinary journey continued with kangkong and baby prawns, a stir-fried dish cooked to perfection, featuring garlic, baby-dried shrimp, salt, and sugar. The menu also boasts a comforting dumpling soup, perfect for colder months, and jolpai (olive) juice, a refreshing beverage with a tangy and sweet flavour that pairs well with the delectable meals.
The cost of meals at Timeout ranges from Tk250 to Tk1,250 (excluding VAT).
Ambience
In terms of ambience, situated in Banani, Timeout's space is characterized by its small, minimalist, trendy design, often buzzing with activity, especially during lunch hours. The decor, primarily in white, red, and black, exudes a budget-friendly yet personalized charm. Samina Salman, a founding partner at Timeout, emphasized their goal of achieving a smart decor while keeping costs in check.
Challenges
Despite its popularity, Timeout faces challenges due to its residential location. Moving to a commercial area, according to Ahmed, might necessitate a significant price hike, potentially resulting in a loss of customers. She expressed a desire to relocate to a commercial building, emphasizing the need for affordable rents for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Salman disclosed that Timeout had two branches but had to close the Gulshan one during the pandemic due to low sales and financial constraints. Now, staff members from both branches operate from the same location due to late hours rather than facing salary reductions.
The restaurant raised prices last year, citing inflation as a significant factor impacting their profit margin.
"Our clientele consists primarily of middle-class individuals, so relocating to a commercial area would be too expensive for them. On the other hand, we have problems every few years if we stay put in our current residential location", she explained.
